A scheduling conflict prevented 2009 ADRL Pro Extreme World Champion Todd Tutterow from attending the grand opening Jan. 17, of a new Transportation Technology Center (TTC) at Forsyth Technical Community College (FTCC) in Winston-Salem, NC, but his Jeffers Race Cars-built, Pro Extreme (PX) ’67 Mustang GT500 was front and center as one of the stars of the event.

Attending from Tutterow’s race team based in nearby Yadkinville were his wife, Denise, and crew members Brad Schmidt and Greg Vogler. FTCC President Dr. Gary Green, Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines and legendary NASCAR team owner Richard Childress also were on hand for the “Firing of the Engine” official opening of the 139,000-square-foot complex.

The new TTC is a one-of-a-kind facility in the Southeast and will house such diverse programs as Richard Childress Race Car Technology, Automotive Systems, Heavy Equipment and Transport, Recreational Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, Collision Repair and Refinishing, and Motorcycle Maintenance.

“This facility has been a long time in the making and we are very proud of what we have accomplished here,” said Randy Butner, director of the Richard Childress Race Car Technology program. Butner, who races in the NASCAR Modified class at the historic, quarter-mile Bowman Gray Stadium circle track, also drew some inspiration from sitting behind the wheel of Tutterow’s three-second, 210-mph ADRL machine.

“Tutterow’s Mustang has gotten many of us here at TTC excited about finishing our Pontiac Trans Am drag car that the students have been working on for several semesters, but we have a long way to go,” Butner said.

Mike Phillips from Hank Thomas Performance, which also supports Tutterow as an associate sponsor, said, “We look forward to helping Butner and students with the drag car as we have in the past with other program projects.”
