Top Fuel Power Rankings (After 8 of 22 Races)

RANK (LW) TEAM RECORD COMMENT
Spencer Massey 1 (7) Don Schumacher Racing 17-6 Spencer and the Fram Auto Lites didn’t quite have the performance in Englishtown, but that didn’t stop them from finding their way to the winner’s circle with a string of ultra-consistent and quick-enough reaction times from Massey (.063, .062, .065, .065). Shuler and Okuhara are certainly no slouches on the tune-up, and if these guys start combining 3.70s at 320 with Massey’s reaction times, they may well find themselves on a championship run.
Del Worsham 2 (2) Al-Anabi Racing 19-5 It’s very difficult not to give Worsham the nod for the No. 1 spot in the DI Top Fuel Power Rankings. The Al-Anabi team is staying true to powerhouse form, and Del has been a monster behind the wheel, but they fell a little short in E-Town, and just to show they’re human – they remain in the No. 2 spot. Worsham isn’t a lock for the title in 2011, but he’s the closest thing to it at this point in time.
Larry Dixon 3 (4) Al-Anabi Racing 12-8 He’s been to two finals so far in 2011 and has yet to seal the deal, but LD and the boys in maroon aren’t getting concerned yet. Dixon and teammate Del Worsham are certainly proof-positive that a two-car team is a powerful weapon, but it’s not been overly rewarding for LD just yet. The lowest they’ve qualified in 2011 has been 4th, so this makes the 8th straight race they went into with favorable position, which has to pay off sooner or later.
Antron Brown 4 (1) Don Schumacher Racing 15-6 Does Antron Brown deserve to fall three spots? Eh, probably not. It happens, though, and a second-round exit in E-Town didn’t help – especially with all the other top-tier guys doing so well. These guys can’t seem to help but run over 320mph, though, which displays a whole lot of horsepower that not everyone seems to be utilizing.
Brandon Bernstein 5 (5) Kenny Bernstein Racing 5-8 It’s starting to seem like Brandon Bernstein and the Blue Man Group are starting to get their program headed in the right direction, and we’re pretty sure they couldn’t be happier about it. Truth be told, Brandon and the Copart Top Fuel Dragster have run well in qualifying all year, just struggled on race day. They had only gotten out of the first round once – in Vegas – and then again in Englishtown when they appeared in the semifinals. They’re sneaking up on it, and BB may well find himself holding a Wally in the coming weeks.
Tony Schumacher 6 (3) Don Schumacher Racing 14-8 It doesn’t change much in terms of his legacy as one of the best ever, but Tony Schumacher hasn’t gotten off to a very good start in 2011. They’re another team that has qualified well, but just fallen short on race day. Fortunately, with the NHRA’s Countdown to the Championship, Schumacher is in ship-shape in the No. 4 slot points-wise, and will more than likely be ready to contend for the title come Indy.
Doug Kalitta 7 (6) Kalitta Motorsports 10-8 It’s hard to argue against the second round of Top Fuel being one of the toughest rounds in all of drag racing. Those 8 cars are the best in the world. Unfortunately for Doug Kalitta, he wasn’t one of the four that moved on in Englishtown, but hey – he was there!
Morgan Lucas 8 (8) Morgan Lucas Racing 6-7 Morgan was hot out of the gate in 2011, but started to cool off after his win in Pomona. If they can step up their qualifying efforts and get on the “right” side of the eliminations ladder, they can still have a strong showing this season, but going into race day having to get around a top-qualified car isn’t going to make it easy.
Bob Vandergriff, Jr. 9 (NR) Vandergriff Motorsports 4-7 Does Bob deserve to be higher on the list? Probably, but it’s tough when he went out in E1 at Raceway Park last weekend. It was great to see him in the final in Topeka, but it wasn’t necessarily a powerful performance that got him there – it was a combination of luck, skill, and simply being there. There are few people we’d rather see doing well, though, and it’s good for the sport for an underdog to be going rounds in NHRA Top Fuel.
Shawn Langdon 10 (10) Morgan Lucas Racing 7-7 After a DNQ to start the season in Pomona, David Grubnic squeaked into the field in 16th at Gainesville, but showed great improvement with a 7th-place start in Las Vegas. He also got his first round win of the year before falling to Bernstein in the quarter-finals and now sits 12th, just 24 points outside of the Top 10.

Dixon and Worsham, what more needs to be said, AJ has another car to get data from now and a great driver in Worsham. Antron is deserving, but I just havent seen the consistecy to make Him a favorite. Darkhorse has got to be shawn Langdon, the man can cut a light and is a good driver, His first win will come this year I believe.

  2. Maurice Henderson says:

Kelly, U are right on the money. Until some can clone AJ and get him as their crew chief, Al-Nabia may run away with the championship with either Dixon or Worsham. I am big LD fan but I have always wanted Worsham to win a championship and this may be his best year to finally get the prize. His car is 13-0 in finals, not a bad deal to be driving some one's last year's car.
